There is no oil shortage in the world, instead the issue is the ability to recover the trapped oil and refine it to meet new global limits in a cost effective and environmentally friendly way. When crude oil prices had climbed, the oil producers had strong incentives to get every barrel of oil out of the ground. Expensive Enhanced Oil Recovery technologies were used and Oil/Tar Sands production greatly increased. However, with the significant drop in oil prices, the spreads are not as great and producers are scrambling to find more cost effective and efficient ways to recover the stranded oil.

Steam is the present standard technology or SAGD, (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage) for the recovery of the heavy oil from Oil/Tar sands and is creating tremendous long term environmental impacts. The standard steam method requires large steam facilities that use a significant amount of energy (1 out of every 3 barrels of oil produced to create the steam), uses tremendous amounts of water (twice the amount of fresh water that the entire city of Calgary uses in a year) which ends up in polluted tailing ponds besides the significant air pollutions that Steam technology creates.

Alberta government admits that every day 2.5 to 10 million barrels of precious fresh water is used and rendered useless in Alberta, Canada to produce the bitumen oil. Environmental Defence just released a new report on the Alberta Oil Sands, calling it the most destructive project on Earth.

  1. Oil sands mining is licensed to use twice the amount of fresh water that the entire city of Calgary uses in a year.
  2. At least 90% of the fresh water used in the oil sands ends up in the tailing ponds is so toxic that propane cannons are used to keep ducks from landing.
  3. Processing the oil sands uses enough natural gas in a day to heat 3 million homes.
  4. The toxic tailing ponds are considered one of the largest human-made structures in the world. The ponds span 50 square kilometers and can be seen from space.
  5. Producing a barrel of oil from the oil sands produces three times more greenhouse gas emissions than a barrel of conventional oil.

JBI's New Technology of a Family of Liquid Catalysts– ("LC ℠")

JBI's new Family of Catalysts (LC ℠) is a proprietary liquid that utilizes a new molecular science that was discovered by JBI and applied to certain catalysts to create a special chemical formulation, resulting in the creation of a proprietary liquid with unique properties. The formula and new molecular treatment combine to create molecular bonds with hydrocarbons or “oil” that are many times stronger than other molecular bonds. This bond is more than one hundred-fold the strength of mere surface tension holding the oil in Oil/Tar sands and downhole formations. LC ℠ creates a temporary bonds with the oil, the oil literally only bonds to itself causing it to release from any formation and prevents it from reattaching the viscosity is like Diesel for easy flow. This temporary LC ℠ /oil bond is easily reserved allowing the oil to be ready for processing and the LC ℠ is recaptured for re-use without losing its properties. LC ℠ not only reclaims more hydrocarbons in an environmentally friendly way, it can be recaptured for reuse over and over without losing its properties.

Recovery of oil from Oil/Tar Sands

To recovery the heavy oil from the oil/tar sands, JBI uses its LC ℠ proprietary Modular Wash System that can be located near the mining sites. The oil/tar sands are mined and crushed then put on a conveyor belt to go into the wash system. An auger moves the oil sands through the wash system where the oil sands are bathed in the LC ℠. The LC ℠ creates a temporary bond with the hydrocarbon or oil so it literally only clings to itself and releases from the soils. The cleaned soils are moved to a dryer where minimal temperature is applied to recapture the vapor of the LC ℠ and the soils are cleaned to ppm of any oil. The oil/encapsulated with LC ℠ is easily pumped from the wash tanks and flows like diesel until a set point where the LC ℠ ℠/ oil bond is released. The oil is ready for processing, the LC ℠ is recaptured for re-use and the sands are cleaned to ppm all at a fraction of the cost of the standard steam process.

There is no significant energy used except for the conveyor belt, the auger, the pumps and to generate a few degree increase in temperature. The only water used is for maintaining a vapor lock to avoid losing any LC ℠. The LC ℠ process does not create pollutions, does not waste water nor does it create any tailing ponds. LC ℠ is eco-friendly and cost effective method to recover the heavy oil from oil/tar sands.

Enhancing Down hole Recovery

LC ℠ is specifically formulated for each down hole project. Prior to water flooding, the LC ℠ is put down hole then followed by normal water flooding. Once the LC ℠ reaches the oil, it creates a temporary bond so the oil releases from the formation, the LC ℠ also changes to a vapor state to reach into the pores and crevices to bond with the stranded oil. The oil releases from the formations drops to the already established payzone channel and is pushed by water through the payzone. The LC ℠/Oil bond keeps the oil from reattaching to the formations and flows like that of diesel. At a set location, with a minimal temperature increase the bond is released. The oil is ready for processing and the LC ℠ is recaptured for re-use.

Cleaning Oil Spills on Land or Water

Land: The process is similar to that of recovering oil from Oil/Tar sands. Instead of Oil/Tar sands being washed in the LC ℠ Modular Wash System, the contaminated soils are placed in the system.

Water: The process would be to either spray LC ℠ on the oil that has reached the surface and “drop” the oil to the bottom of the water or drop it to a platform. The Oil/LC ℠ including some water is vacuumed to vessel where the Oil/LC ℠ automatically separates from the water . Then minimal temperature is applied to release the Oil/LC ℠ bond. The oil and water is separated, the oil is salvaged and ready for processing and the LC ℠ is recaptured for Re-use. Or The oil is skimmed from the top of the water and placed into a vessel where the LC ℠ is mixed with the oil to separate any water. Then minimal heat is applied to release the Oil/LC ℠ bond. The oil is salvaged for processing and the LC ℠is recaptured for re-use.

Heavy oil transportation without having to upgrade

The oil that is temporarily encapsulated or bonded with the LC℠ flows like diesel so it does not have to be upgraded for movement. At a set location with minimum temperature increase, the temporary LC℠/Oil bond is released. The oil is back to its original viscosity and ready for processing and the LC℠ is recaptured for re-use.

In water separation

The LC℠ immediately separates the oil from the water. The LC ℠ is recaptured for reuse and the oil salvaged for resale.

Tank or Rail Car Cleaning

LC℠ is sprayed in the tank or rail car, the LC℠ creates a temporary bond with the hydrocarbon/oil which releases the oil from the walls and the LC℠/Oil bond flows like diesel and is then pumped
